Mid-Michigan – On Thursday morning, two separate crashes closed stretches of Interstate 75 in both directions for more than 90 minutes in Saginaw County.
The Michigan Department of Transportation reports that northbound I-75 was closed near M-57 or Vienna Road in Clio shortly after 6:15 a.m.
Traffic cameras captured emergency vehicles responding to a crash a short distance south of the Birch Run interchange.
According to the Birch Run Township Fire Department, units were responding to block traffic due to a semi-truck crash when a passing motorist collided with the back of a fire truck.
When the crash occurred, firefighters were seated inside the truck and reported no injuries. The fire department did not say if anyone in the vehicle that hit the fire truck was hurt.
A separate crash caused the southbound lanes of I-75 at the southern I-675 interchange in Buena Vista Township to be closed around 6:30 a.m., about 15 miles north. Authorities did not provide any information about the incident early Thursday.
MDOT reported that both stretches of Interstate 75 reopened around 8 a.m. However, traffic was moving slower than usual due to slippery conditions and residual backups.
Many roads in Mid-Michigan were slick and icy after rain on Wednesday evening turned to snow overnight. The Storm Tracker 12 Weather Team declared an Alert Day for Thursday morning due to high winds.
