Frito-Lay has announced a major recall of some Tostitos tortilla chips due to a serious allergen risk. The company found that a few bags of Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips may contain nacho cheese-flavored chips, which means they could have milk, a known allergen, that was not listed on the packaging. This poses a serious risk to people with milk allergies.
Why This Recall Is Important
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has labeled this as a Class I recall, the highest level, which means the product could cause serious health problems or even death in some cases. Milk is one of the top allergens in the U.S., especially dangerous for people who are highly sensitive.
Many people, including children and adults, are allergic to milk. Reactions can be mild, like skin rashes and stomach problems, but in some cases, it can cause anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening reaction. That’s why even a small mistake in labeling can be extremely dangerous.
Which Chips Are Being Recalled?
The recall affects 1,295 bags of 13-ounce Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips. These were sold in 13 states across the U.S. They were available in local stores and online from March 7, 2025.
The states involved are: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

What Should You Do Now?
If you or someone in your family has a milk allergy, do not eat these chips. Throw them away right away or contact Frito-Lay for more information. Even if the chips look normal, they might contain nacho cheese, which has milk.
So far, no allergic reactions or health issues have been reported. But Frito-Lay decided to recall the products as a precaution, to avoid any serious incidents.
What Experts Are Saying
Health experts say milk allergy is one of the most common allergies in both children and adults. Many kids outgrow it by the time they go to school, but some continue to have it for life.
Clinton Mathias, a professor of nutritional sciences, explained that symptoms of milk allergy can be different for each person. Some may only get mild hives or stomach issues, while others may suffer from severe symptoms like vomiting, swelling, breathing problems, or even loss of consciousness. Because these reactions can be unpredictable, it is always best for allergic people to stay away from foods that may contain milk.
