A New Child Tax Credit Is Ready to Be Sent to Qualifying Families in the US

During the next tax season, American families with children under 17 have a great chance to benefit from a child tax credit (CTC) of up to $1,700. This credit is refundable. This benefit, managed by the IRS, aims to reduce taxes and provide important financial help, especially as living costs go up.

For the 2024 fiscal year, which will be filed in 2025, the CTC can be up to $2,000 for each eligible child. Out of this total, you can get back up to $1,700, even if you do not owe any taxes. This means that families with low and moderate incomes can get the credit as a direct payment to help with the increasing costs of raising children.

The program is for children under 17 years old at the end of the fiscal year, and they must have a valid Social Security number (SSN). They also need to meet extra requirements about where they live, their relationships, and their financial help, making sure that support goes to those who need it the most.

Eligibility criteria for the CTC stimulus check

To receive the CTC, the taxpayer must file their tax return in 2025 and meet the following requirements:

  • The child must live with the applicant for more than half of the year.
  • The child cannot provide more than 50% of his or her own support.
  • The taxpayer and child must be US citizens, nationals, or residents.
  • Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) must not exceed $200,000 for individuals, or $400,000 on joint returns.

The IRS explains that for people who earn more than these income limits, the credit amount slowly goes down until it disappears completely.

The application process to claim the CTC

To get the credit, applicants need to list qualifying children on Form 1040 and add Schedule 8812 to figure out the eligible amount. It is important to check all the information carefully because mistakes can slow down the credit process.

He IRS provides digital tools, such as “Where’s My Refund?”, for credit monitoring, although refunds that include CTC are typically available in mid-February due to additional reviews.

The child tax credit is helpful right now, but we do not know what will happen with it in the future. If new laws are not put in place, the refundable credit may drop to $1,000 in 2026, and income limits will go back to what they were before 2017.

Congress is currently evaluating proposals to extend or increase the CTC. Senator J.D. Vance said, “I want to raise the credit if Congress can reach an agreement.” These talks highlight how the program helps reduce economic inequality and promote investments in education and children’s well-being.

You can start filing tax returns for the 2024 tax year in January 2025, and you have until April 2025 to do so. During this time, parents and guardians should collect the needed documents to check if they qualify and to get the most benefit.
