Pope Francis, 88, has made his first public appearance after being released from the hospital two weeks ago. He was warmly welcomed by a joyful crowd as he entered St. Peter’s Square in a wheelchair for the Jubilee Mass for the Sick. This was a special moment for many, as the pope had been recovering from a serious illness.
A Warm Greeting and Simple Words
As he moved through the crowd, people cheered and smiled, happy to see him back. At the end of the Mass, led by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Pope Francis gave a gentle blessing. He shared a few kind words, saying, “Have a good Sunday everyone. Thank you so much.”
A Message for Health Workers
Shortly after the Mass ended, the Vatican released a written message prepared by Pope Francis. In it, he focused on the challenges faced by healthcare workers such as doctors, nurses, and medical staff.
He noted that many of them work in tough conditions and are not always given the support they need. Sometimes, they even face violence while doing their jobs. “Their mission is not easy and must be supported and respected,” the pope wrote.
A Call for Peace Around the World
Pope Francis also used the opportunity to speak about global conflicts. He asked for prayers for peace in Gaza, where many people are suffering without food, water, or shelter. He also prayed for Ukraine, which he called “tormented” because of the ongoing war.
He continued to pray for peace in other troubled areas including the Middle East, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Myanmar (recently affected by an earthquake), and Haiti, where two religious sisters were killed due to violence.
Health Battle Behind the Scenes
The pope had not been seen in public since March 23. On that day, he gave a short blessing from the balcony of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. He had been treated for pneumonia in both lungs for more than five weeks. According to his doctors, his life was at risk twice during that time—making this his most serious health issue since becoming pope 12 years ago.

Despite his health troubles, Pope Francis continues to show strength and kindness. His return to public life, even in a wheelchair, reminded many people of his dedication and care for others. His prayers for both health workers and people suffering in conflict zones show his ongoing concern for peace and humanity.
