Rescuers seek for Myanmar earthquake survivors as the death toll increases to over 140

As the death toll from the Myanmar earthquake rises to over 140, rescuers look for people who are still alive.

On Friday, March 28, a strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar. It caused tremors as far away as Bangkok and destroyed buildings in the area.

The military junta that runs Myanmar said that at least 144 people were killed and 737 were hurt in the earthquake that caused both Thailand and Myanmar to declare a state of emergency.

General Min Aung Hlaing, who is in charge of the military, said that more deaths and injuries were likely to happen.

In Bangkok, which the government has declared a disaster area, a high-rise building that was still being built fell down in a huge cloud of dust near Chatuchak Market. Dramatic videos going around on social media showed people screaming and running as the building fell apart into a cloud of dust.

Helpers say that at least 117 people are still missing in the building. The deputy governor of Bangkok, Tavida Kamolvej, said that nine people were killed, eight of them on the construction site.
