Rapper OG Maco died weeks after being hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 32 years old. The “U Guessed It” rapper’s family confirmed his death on Friday, December 27, with an Instagram post dedicated to the late musician, real name Benedict Ihesiba Jr.
“His life exemplified resilience, creativity, and boundless love. “He touched so many lives and left a lasting impact with his music, passion, and unwavering spirit,” Maco’s family said in a lengthy statement. “While we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived — one that will continue to inspire and uplift others.”
Maco’s family went on to say that his influence will “remain forever etched in our hearts,” and they asked his fans to reach out and share their memories, thoughts, and condolences during this difficult time. “Thank you for standing by him throughout his journey,” the statement concluded. “Today, we celebrate a life that was extraordinary in every way.”
On December 16, Maco’s family posted an update on Instagram, stating that the rapper was in “critical but stable condition” at the time. “We want to inform OG Maco’s fans, friends, and supporters that he is currently in critical but stable condition,” according to the statement.
“He is receiving the best possible care, and we are optimistic as he continues to fight. At this time, we respectfully request that you respect our privacy; however, if you have any messages or information for the family, please contact us via DM.”
On December 14, Maco’s manager Poppa Perc provided an update on his condition to AllHipHop, saying, “I thought he was dead when I first saw him. We were about to rebrand and release [new music] under a completely new alias. “We need everyone’s prayers.
Poppa Perc went on, “He’s still on life support, still fighting,” and added, “They’re doing multiple tests on his brain and trying to let the swelling go down, let his head heal a little bit, so they can do a procedure.” Only immediate family is permitted at the hospital, but we have been receiving updates.”
Maco had a history of medical problems, including losing an eye in 2016 in a car accident. Three years later, the rapper was diagnosed with a “skin-eating disease” after being treated for a rash.
