FRUITPORT, MI — The gymnasium at Beach Elementary School, located roughly ten miles south of Muskegon, had its roof lifted by strong winds.
The Fruitport Community Schools superintendent, Jason J. Kennedy, issued a statement saying, “The roof on the gym at Beach has blown off and there is significant flooding throughout the building.”
He announced that Monday, March 31st, would be the last day of classes at the school.
Kennedy stated, “As our team and contractors attempt to minimize the damage, the closure at Beach may continue past tomorrow.”
According to the superintendent, the remaining facilities in the Muskegon County-based school district should be ready for classes on Monday by around 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Kennedy added that if the weather keeps damaging the district’s facilities, that might change.
Pictures of the damage to the elementary school roof were posted on the district’s Facebook page.
The National Weather Service reports that severe winds of up to 95 mph have been caused by a large line of storms that are moving across Michigan late this afternoon and early this evening.
A series of severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued as the storm system that entered Michigan in the southwest corner of the state traveled eastward into Ann Arbor, Detroit, and The Thumb.
