Ex-UPMC doctor allegedly attempted to push wife off Hawaii hiking trail

A former UPMC doctor and assistant professor at Pitt was arrested after police in Hawaii claimed he attempted to push his wife off a hiking trail and hit her in the head with a rock.

On Monday evening, Honolulu police said Gerhardt Konig was arrested after a brief foot chase near Pali Highway. Earlier in the day, police released a poster featuring Konig’s photo, claiming he was wanted for attempted murder at Pali Lookout.

According to police, Konig was on Oahu with his wife Monday morning when he attempted to push her off a trail and struck her in the head with a rock. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said, and was able to tell officers that her 46-year-old husband had attacked her and left her for dead.

Honolulu police announced Monday evening that Konig had been arrested and that charges were pending.

The Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout, located over a thousand feet above the Oahu coastline, provides panoramic views of the Koʻolau cliffs and Windward Coast, according to gohawaii.com.

Konig was a doctor with the Anesthesia Medical Group and has since been suspended pending an investigation, according to CBS affiliate KGMB. He worked under an independent contract and provided medical services to facilities on Maui, according to the TV station.

Prior to that, the doctor was an anesthesiologist at UPMC and an assistant professor of anesthesiology and bioengineering at Pitt. UPMC stated that Konig has not been employed for more than two years.

KDKA-TV spoke with former neighbors and friends, who said Konig worked at UPMC before moving his wife and two small children to Maui to pursue his dream job.

Ben Brown spent several years living next to the Konigs in Mt. Lebanon. While he was not particularly close to the couple, he described them as friendly and good neighbors. He expressed surprise at the news.
