Drunk driver crashes into a Michigan State Police patrol vehicle and continues driving along the highway

DETROIT — A drunk driver was arrested Christmas night after colliding with a Michigan State Police patrol vehicle on westbound I-94 near Mt. Elliott.

According to MSP, a trooper was investigating an abandoned car on the freeway around 11:30 p.m. when a suspect driving a Ford Fusion collided with their vehicle.

The patrol vehicle’s lights were activated at the time of the collision, and it was blocking the right lane of the freeway. After colliding with the MSP car, the suspect continued driving westbound on I-94 for some distance. Troopers eventually caught up with the suspect after his vehicle became disabled on the freeway.

Police determined that the 47-year-old man was impaired and arrested him before being taken to the Detroit Detention Center. The trooper was not injured in the crash.

“We were fortunate that the trooper was not struck by this suspect,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “We continue to urge drivers to avoid risky driving behaviors that result in traffic accidents. This driver not only failed to yield to an emergency vehicle, but they were also driving drunk.”
