Owosso’s water and sewer bills are due without penalty or late fees by Aug. 5, in line with a change for the quarterly billings as pursued by Councilman Burton Fox after retirees on Social Security pensions asked for a few additional days. For decades, Social Security checks were normally distributed on the third of the month, but city water and sewer bills were due at the end of the month, thus retirees would face late fees if they could not meet the payments.
The city’s next quarterly billing will reflect a 3.6 percent rate increase approved in the spring by the City Council and will affect all Owosso water system users in Caledonia and Owosso townships as well as the city. Township sewer rates are set by the townships. Corunna buys its water from Owosso, and the rate is set by contract based on the Owosso residential rate.
