Shiawassee County voters turned out in large numbers on Tuesday, Nov. 6 to decide local and state ballot proposals and important races at every level of government. With 30,210 Shiawassee County voters casting ballots in Tuesday’s midterm election, a substantial increase over the 24,704 voters who participated in the 2014 midterm election, it is evident that county voters on both sides of the aisle understood the magnitude of Election Day 2018.

With all the votes counted, the results of Tuesday’s election are as follows:

• State Offices: Republican Ben Frederick won a second term as 85th District State Rep. over Democrat Eric Sabin, 60.67 percent to 38.91 percent. In the race for the 24th District State Senate seat, Republican Tom Barrett defeated Democrat Kelly Rossman-McKinney, 54.22 percent to 40.97 percent.

• County Offices: Republican Ric Crawford bested Democrat Jeff Apsey, 54.74 percent to 45.06 percent, to earn a seat on the Shiawassee Road Commission. Four Board of Commissioners seats were contested, with Republican Marlene Webster defeating Democrat Danny Miller, 56.79 percent to 42.92 percent, in District 1; Democrat John Horvath defeating Cynthia Farrell, 52.74 percent to 46.74 percent, in District 2; Gary Holzhausen defeating Thomas Foster, 55.40 percent to 44.15 percent, in District 3; and Cindy Garber defeating incumbent Jeffery Bartz, 50.89 percent to 48.86 percent, in District 6. Brandon Marks was reelected in District 4, Jeremy Root was reelected in District 5 and John Plowman reclaimed his seat in District 7.

• City Mayors: Charles Kerridge won in Corunna with 97.72 percent of the votes, Michael Culpepper won 95.12 percent of the votes in Laingsburg and James Huguelet captured 95.68 percent of votes in Perry.

• City Councils: Alan Ducastel (31.64 percent), Mary Hetherington (36.24 percent) and David Rhodabeck (31.24 percent) were elected to the Laingsburg City Council; Chris Eveleth (14.27 percent), Janae Fear (13.57 percent), Jerry Haber (16.14 percent) and Nicholas Pidek (12.08 percent) were elected to the Owosso City Council; and Kraig Elliott (23.20 percent), Adam Grass (23.40 percent) and Karen McDaniels-Davis (29.28 percent) were elected to the Perry City Council.

In Corunna, Helen Granger won reelection in Ward 1, and John Lawson defeated Becky Smith, 51.06 percent to 47.76 percent, in Ward 2.

In Durand, Connie Cobley was reelected in Precinct 1, Kenneth McDonough reclaimed his seat in Precinct 2 and Rich Folaron was reelected as Member at Large.

• Ballot Proposals: Voters approved six of the seven local ballot proposals on Tuesday, with the only countywide proposal, the County Veterans Services Program Proposal, being approved by a wide margin, 66.19 percent to 33.81 percent. Also approved was the City of Owosso Parks and Historical Sites Proposal, 54.23 percent to 45.77 percent; the Owosso Township Fire Department Proposal, 75.26 percent to 24.74 percent; the Owosso Township Fire Equipment Proposal, 75.77 percent to 24.23 percent; the Owosso Township SATA Proposal, 67.73 percent to 30.27 percent; and the Shiawassee Township Public Transportation Millage, 58.15 percent to 41.85 percent. The only proposal to fail to pass was the City of Perry Partial Headlee Override Proposal, which was defeated 64.74 percent to 35.26 percent.

• Village Offices: In Bancroft, Brian Barnum beat out Randy Beebe, 70.53 percent to 28.95 percent, for village president; Kevin Bible (21.35 percent), Robin Miller (37.08 percent) and Tamara Terpening (38.48 percent) were elected to full terms on the Bancroft Village Council; and Ann Miller (35.01 percent), Michael St. Louis (29.41 percent) and Linda Wert-Fuller (34.45 percent) were elected to partial terms.

In Byron, Anthony Prestonise was elected village president; Ronald Berecz (33.41), Linda Chapman (32.69) and Hubert Miller (32.21) were elected to full terms on the Byron Village Council and Bob Campbell was elected to a partial term.

In Lennon, Barbara BakerOmerod was elected village president; Geraldine Terry was elected clerk; Larry Widigan was elected treasurer; Sterling Barnhart (30.21), William Sprague (34.03) and Byron Vowell (32.29) were elected to full terms as trustees, and Keith St. Clair was elected to a partial term as a trustee.

In Morrice, Harold Dickerson was elected village president and Phyllis Dickerson was elected to a full term on the Morrice Village Council.

In New Lothrop, John Maksimchuk Jr. was elected village president; Karen Maksimchuk was elected clerk; Terry Tate was elected treasurer; and Keith Gauthier and Patrick Olk were elected to the New Lothrop Village Council.

In Vernon, Matt Kimmer was elected village president, and Bob MacNeill and Carolyn Pfeiffer were elected as trustees.

• School Boards: James Anibal (26.77), Amy Lawrence (24.18), Eric Sneed (22.80) and Jeff Vandemark (24.70) were elected to the Byron Area Schools Board of Education; Rebecka Butcher (34.80), Scott Kohagen (33.63) and Martin Maier (29.82) were elected to the Chesaning Union Schools Board of Education; and Dennis Braid (26.75), Joe Peterson (25.08), Jan Ray (22.41) and Jennifer Strauch (25.08) were elected to the Corunna Public Schools Board of Education.

John Dennis (21.67), Cari Shephard (26.92) and Jacob Zdunic (31.23) were elected to the Durand Area Schools Board of Education; Patrick Nolan (49.10) and Natalie Elkins (50.09) were elected to the Laingsburg Community Schools Board of Education; and Kristopher Hammond (25.84), Kelsi Iler (21.76), Roy Munro (26.06) and Barbara Wyzga (25.01) were elected to the Morrice Area Schools Board of Education.

George Ruddy (20.40), Jessica Unangst (17.07), Wendy Vincke (21.36) and Richard White (18.38) were elected to full terms on the New Lothrop Public Schools Board of Education, and Joseph Henige was elected to a partial term; David Huff (30.79), Eric Jones (25.19) and Michael Schiffer (21.81) were elected to full terms on the Ovid-Elsie Area Schools Board of Education, and Stacie Rulison was elected to a partial term.

Sara Keyes (20.10), Rick Mowen (21.64), Shelly Ochodnicky (23.70) and Olga Quick (17.02) were elected to the Owosso Public Schools Board of Education; Mark Ruzinsky (49.51) and Charles Scovill (48.81) were elected to six-year terms on the Perry Public Schools Board of Education, and Catherine Hahn (26.92) and Nicole Schneider (24.94) were elected to four-year terms.
