Michigan State Police are reminding drivers of the state’s Move Over Law.
Michigan’s expanded “Move Over” law became effective in 2019. It required drivers to reduce their speed to 10 mph below the posted limit and yield their lane when passing police or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
The warning comes as police release footage from a December 12 crash on I-75 in Oakland County.
Three Michigan State Police troopers were investigating a crash near the 11 Mile Road ramp and had parked their patrol cars on the left shoulder and in the left lane, with their emergency lights activated to protect the crash site.
According to officials, a massive truck attempted to use the left lane to bypass slow traffic and exit the road. and
The massive vehicle drove down the left shoulder, approaching two troopers and a tow truck driver who were near the original incident and had to leap over the median wall to avoid being hit.
According to officials, the semi truck came to a halt after colliding with an empty car involved in the first accident.
A trooper was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and then released. Nobody else was hurt.
The driver of the semi truck was arrested for reckless driving.
Drivers must slow down and pull over for stalled emergency vehicles. If cars are unable to pass due to traffic, weather, or other road conditions, they must slow down and proceed cautiously.
Drivers who do not pull over or slow down may be issued a ticket carrying a $400 fine and two points on their license. If a driver injures or kills someone, it is a felony punishable by a lengthy jail sentence.
