Motor City Racing Promotions official and Owosso Speedway regular Mike Niebrzydowski, 49, passed away early Sunday morning, Sept. 25 from injuries sustained while working a non-sanctioned Motor City Racing Promotion event at the Owosso Speedway, 7204 W. M-21, Saturday night. A Michigan State Police press release states that troopers were dispatched to the scene at 12:17 a.m. Sunday morning, and that Niebrzydowski was pronounced dead upon reaching Sparrow Hospital in Lansing after being airlifted from the track. The report also states that Niebrzydowski was attempting to slow race traffic due to an unrelated crash when he was struck, though witness reports vary as to the actual cause of the accident. The incident was still under investigation as of Monday afternoon, so the Michigan State Police could not release any further details.
The Motor City Racing Promotions website has reported that Niebrzydowski was a long time official and had previously worked many series – such as the Midwest Indoor Racing Series, the American Ethanol Late Model Tour, the Sprints on Dirt traveling racing series, and the Champion Racing Association – and at tracks such as the Dixie Motor Speedway and the Owosso Speedway.
