The time to prepare is now.' Here's the latest on snow and severe cold in Mississippi

Forecasts had predicted extreme cold in much of Mississippi this week, but new information suggests even colder temperatures.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency issued a social media warning Monday evening, advising residents to prepare for a wintry mix of precipitation, cold temperatures, and even colder wind chill factors.

“A wintry mix of snow and light freezing rain/sleet is possible in north Mississippi from Tuesday night (2/18/25) to Wednesday morning (2/19/25).” Beginning Wednesday (2/19/25), dangerous cold is expected throughout Mississippi, with wind chills below 15 degrees. “The time to prepare is now,” the agency stated on the social media platform X.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, sleet and freezing rain are expected from U.S. 82 north. Residents north of Oxford can expect up to 1 inch of accumulated snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

The entire state will experience lower temperatures this week, but northern areas such as Oxford may see temperatures drop to 11 degrees on Thursday morning, while Jackson is expected to dip to 19.

The National Weather Service has forecasted what to expect across the state as of Tuesday afternoon.
