The 'Gem of the Huron', America's second-largest freshwater island, is a breathtaking hub of adventure

Drummond Island, one of the world’s largest lake islands, is located near the edge of the Great Lakes in the United States, just a short paddle from Canada.

It forms the easternmost tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and is known as the “Gem of the Huron” due to its abundance of exciting outdoor activities. It is the second-largest freshwater island in the United States, following one of Michigan’s remote national parks, Isle Royale.

Drummond is not connected by land, but visitors can take a quick car ferry to Highway M-134. The township on the island’s north shore is a small hub of activity, complete with a few shops, restaurants, resorts, and a marina. But the real draw of Drummond is spending time exploring this wild and fascinating island.

There are forests, beaches, marshlands, and lakes. The coasts are surrounded by beach-covered islands that are ideal for exploring by boat or kayak. Stunning Harbor Island National Wildlife Refuge is located just offshore.

The island’s rough terrain and miles of trails make it a must-see for off-road vehicle enthusiasts, but there are also plenty of activities for those driving a standard rental car.

The island supports a variety of ecosystems, including woodlands, swamps, and marshes, as well as beaches, rivers, and lakes. Drummond Island, like its neighbor Bois Blanc Island, provides a unique outdoor adventure and showcases the beauty of Lake Huron.

Four seasons of outdoor fun on Drummond Island

Drummond Island has miles of coastline to kayak along, as well as two different water trails to follow. Hiking and biking trails lead in all directions. The beaches are beautiful, and there are no fewer than 16 shipwrecks offshore that scuba divers enjoy.

Sporting enthusiasts will appreciate the perch, bass, trout, and salmon fishing in the Drummond area, as well as the hunting opportunities on this small island. The birding is fantastic, with numerous species in the area.

The annual Jeep the Mac event attracts hundreds of off-road and all-terrain vehicle drivers to test their skills on challenging trails such as the South Marblehead Loop, making it a must-see destination.

The island has one of the most extensive closed-loop off-road systems in Michigan, with over 100 miles of trails. If you don’t own an off-road vehicle, you can rent one from Beavers to explore the island.

Drummond Island is a destination for all seasons of the year. July and August are the best months for tourism and beachgoing, with daytime highs around 75 degrees Fahrenheit and water temperatures reaching their peak of the year (65 degrees Fahrenheit).

However, Michigan is also the best winter state for a variety of reasons. The island offers 70 miles of groomed, uncrowded trails, making it one of the best places to snowmobile. It is also a popular destination for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, tubing, and ice fishing.

From December to March, the average temperature ranges from 11 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average snowfall of 5 to 6 inches per month.

Making the most of an island getaway on Drummond

Don’t expect to take an airline flight to the island’s airport because the small runway crosses two fairways on the local golf course. Drummond is only accessible by car (via ferry), boat, or private planes willing to dodge golf balls. For the rest of us, airline flights are available to Chippewa County International (55 miles) and Pellston Regional (88 miles).

Camping is popular on Drummond Island, which is not surprising given its outdoor nature. You can pitch a tent under the stars or take your RV on and off the ferry. Drummond Island Township Park has 46 RV sites with a maximum length of 31 feet.

However, if the mere thought of camping causes you to break out in hives, remember that there are other options. Drummond Island Resort is open year-round and offers a lodge and rental cabins. There are also several beautiful vacation rentals on the island, ranging from budget cabins to luxurious chalets.

The island’s dining options are limited and mostly concentrated along the highway near the township. Favorites include the Bear Track Inn, known for its breakfasts, and The Northwood, an all-day pub with a diverse menu.

The Drummond Island Resort also features Bayside Dining and the Pins Bar and Grill. If you plan to stay on the island for an extended period of time, you will most likely want a rental with a kitchen. Sune’s Grocery Market and General Store, located at the corner of M-134 and Shore Road, sells provisions.
