LAINGSBURG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (LES) student Willow Patterson surprised her teacher, Mal Balow, on Grandparents Day recently by presenting him with the gift of a rock that included a personalized message, despite knowing that Balow is not a grandfather. Balow called Willow “an amazing student who always asks questions in every lesson,” and he noted that she gets her “inquisitive nature from her parents.” One of Willow’s parents, her father Mike, joined her for the Grandparents Day celebration only two days after returning from a tour of duty.

“Many of my students know I have a treasured rock garden at my house with stones from around the state of Michigan, and from other countries where LES families have traveled, so Willow knew I would enjoy this,” shared Balow after receiving the gift. “Our students see us as their teachers and make connections within our LES curriculum that allow them to use the subject of education to connect in a variety of ways with the LES staff. I owe Willow a special thanks. And she is correct; I have no grandchildren, but I have been blessed to teach and coach hundreds of students in my 25 years at Laingsburg Community Schools.”

Willow’s rock, which can be seen in the adjacent photo, reads, “I’m without a grandchild, but I’m still RAD!”
