Snowstorm strikes Kansas and Missouri. Here's how to view road conditions across states

If you have to go out while snow is falling in Kansas and Missouri, you should at least check the road conditions before driving.

The Kansas City area is expected to receive 8 to 12 inches of snow, while areas to the north could see even more — 15 to 16 inches, possibly 18 inches for those near U.S. 136 in northern Missouri. Those south of Interstate 70 will most likely see 3 to 8 inches of snow.

“Travel is not advised today,” the Missouri Department of Transportation tweeted on Sunday morning, January 5.

But if you must drive, here are state, local, and other resources to help you check road conditions in the Kansas City area before you leave.

How to check road conditions in Missouri

The MoDOT Traveler Map shows whether snow has accumulated on Missouri highways. The website’s winter weather data displays road closures and highway conditions; green indicates that the road is clear of snow, while purple indicates that it is covered.

You can also access the site via an app; search “MoDOT Traveler Information” in your app store.

For road information, call (888) 275-6636. Sign up for MoDOT’s email and text alerts on their website.

As of 9:30 a.m. Sunday, the map showed that nearly all major highways in the state’s northern half were snow-covered.

How to check road conditions in Kansas

The KanDrive map provides information about Kansas highway conditions.

For winter weather information, a blue road is partially covered with snow, purple is completely covered, and brown indicates “seasonal roadway conditions,” which means you should be prepared for winter.

You can also access the site via an app (search “KanDrive” in your app store) and call 511 for road information.

As of 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, most major Kansas highways were completely or partially covered in snow. The Kansas Turnpike and Interstate 70 in the Kansas City area were marked as partially covered in snow.

How to check if Kansas City roads have been plowed

To see if a Kansas City road has been plowed, visit the city’s Snow Plow map, which shows when roadways were last treated.

Other tips for driving in snow

Navigation apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze collect real-time data on traffic congestion and collisions.

Even if you know your route, apps can help you avoid hazards.

After you’ve checked your route, follow these winter driving tips from the Missouri State Highway Patrol:

  • Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Watch out for icy bridges and ramps.
  • Clear all the snow off your car before driving.
  • Use your headlights for visibility.
