An upcoming skilled trades event hosted by Corunna High School in partnership with the Genesee, Lapeer, Shiawassee Building Trades Council (GLS) will provide information to graduating seniors and to community members about career opportunities in the trades. The free event will be held at Corunna High School on Wednesday, April 20 and is open to the entire community. Corunna High School is located at 417 E. King St., in Corunna. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m., doors open at 5 p.m. It is free to high school students or other people interested in a career in skilled trades.
The purpose of the event is to inform individuals about additional career paths beyond college. Representatives from the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 2, Operating Engineers Local 324, Pipefitters UA 370, Electrical IBEW 948, Ironworkers Local 25, Sheet Metal Workers Local 7, Painters and Allied Trades Local 1052, Laborers Local 1075 and OPCMIA (Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Mason’s International Association) Local 514 will be at the event to share information on the different apprenticeships available.
“Corunna Public Schools has always recognized the importance of career and technical education (CTE) and have strived to maintain and grow our CTE programs. Sponsoring this career night will allow our students and the community to make connections to future employment in these same areas. Our goal is for our students to be career and college ready upon graduation, and this is another component of that successful transition,” said Sherri Svrcek, Director of Guidance at Corunna.
