SHOP WITH A HERO – Walmart hosted their Shop With a Hero event Tuesday, Dec. 15, and with the help of many local fire and police departments brought the joy of Christmas to 40 Shiawassee County youngsters. Each child was given a $60 Walmart gift card and was paired with a “hero,” who then accompanied the child on their shopping experience. The list of participating departments included: The Michigan State Police, Owosso Police, Owosso Township Fire, Vernon Township Fire, Perry Area Fire and Rescue, Morrice Police, Baker College Campus Safety, Corunna Police, Corunna-Caledonia Fire, Lennon Police, Durand Fire, Hazelton Township Fire plus Shiawassee Township Fire and Rescue. Also participating were Circuit Court Judge Matt Stewart and his staff, the Shiawassee County Defense Attorneys and the Bar Association along with several county employees.

This event was made possible by many people, including Walmart store manager Celeste Beemer, loss prevention manager Mark Miller and assistant manager Bill Arnold.

Money needed for the event was provided through a grant written by Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Sergeant Doug Chapman to the Walmart Foundation. Not only did Sergeant Chapman apply for the grant, but he also undertook the job of organizing the event and picking the children to receive gift cards. (Independent Photo/GRAHAM STURGEON)
