WHIMSICAL CLAY JACK-O-LANTERNS were handcrafted during the recent SMARTS (Shiawassee Mobile ARTS for Seniors) class hosted at the Shiawassee Arts Center on Monday, Aug. 27. The class, under the guidance of instructor Marie Gougeon, learned various techniques in forming, molding and texturizing clay slabs to create the fun pieces. Every participant in the class was inspired to create their own, unique “personalities” for their pumpkins – some following more traditional designs and others that were completely free-spirited.

Some upcoming SMARTS classes include “Out on a Limb!” with Linda Van Cise at the Owosso Senior Center on Tuesday, Sept. 4., “Beyond Painted Rocks!” on Monday, Sept. 10 with Karreen Bird at SAC and “Autumn Dirt Road Acrylic Painting” on Tuesday, Sept. 11 with Angela Hamilton at the Owosso Senior Center. The above Jack-O-Lantern project will be glazed on Monday, Sept. 17.

More information on the SMARTS program is available by contacting the Shiawassee Arts Center. No experience is necessary. Classes are offered in collaboration with SCOA at a reduced cost to seniors.

Funding was made available through grants provided by MCACA (Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs) and the Cook Family Foundation.
