SEVERAL SHIAWASSEE COUNTY RESIDENTS took part in the Barry-Roubaix Bike Race in Hastings on Saturday, April 16. It is noted to be the largest gravel race in the world as 3,500 bicyclists traverse through rolling and scenic gravel roads through Barry County.
Cyclocross, mountain, road, single-speed, fixed gear, fatbikes, and tandem bikes are all welcome to participate in a 22-mile, 36-mile, and 62-mile course. Timing is done by chips inserted into the rigid handbar number plates. All bicycles are required to abide by the traffic laws as they race or become disqualified.
These Shiawassee County racers included in medal winners were: Andy Reichert of Bancroft who came in second place in 45-47 age category, Ethan Wehman from Owosso who also came in second in the 19-29 age category, Greg Jenkinson of Corunna who came in sixth place in 45-47 age category. Other racers were Steve Wickham of Laingsburg, Troy Angst of Laingsburg, John Miller of Owosso, Brent Tuma of Owosso, Aaron Maike of Owosso, Craig Weaver of Owosso and Mark Judd of Owosso.
