The Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners were to vote Thursday during their regular meeting to set the Senior Citizens Services Millage at 0.35 mills for the Dec. 1 property tax levy. County voters had approved up to half a mill previously, with commissioners to evaluate annually the request from the Shiawassee Council on Aging, then decide on the amount to be levied on the December property taxes.

Also during the session, commissioners were to approve a contract with Phillip Hathaway of Owosso to develop Phase 1 of a Parks & Recreation Master Plan using $5,508 from the $15,000 previously authorized by the Board of Commissioners with future funds to develop a more comprehensive Parks & Recreation Master Plan utilizing future Waste Management contributions. Hathaway was the county planner more than 40 years ago, leaving a few years later when Owosso hired him as Community Development Director, a position he retired from about eight years ago. He now operates a private consulting firm from his Owosso home.

Another item on the commissioners’ agenda Thursday was to “accept and place on file the Secondary Road Patrol and Traffic Accident Prevention Program Grant Application for Fiscal Year 2016” for Oct. 1, 2015 through Sept. 30, 2016 with an allocation of $85,281.
