The Sexton families, along with many friends, are holding the fourth annual Steeler Seaburn Memorial Golf outing June 27 at Dutch Hollow Gulf Club in Durand.
“Our grandson/nephew/cousin Steeler, was tragically killed on April 6, 2012 (Good Friday) in a hit and run at the young age of 18,” said the announcement on June 19. “Steeler was an avid wrestler, had just placed third in the state and had secured a wrestling scholarship. Steeler had a bright future that was unfortunately cut short. Steeler was the son of Les ‘Tri’ Sexton (and wife Genny), a Corunna High School graduate.
“Following his death, a memorial scholarship fund was created in his name. The fund helps collegiate wrestlers with secondary education costs. The goal of the fund is to award multiple scholarships each year to college bound wrestlers who display the same qualities that made Steeler a competitive wrestler: a team leader and a role model for young wrestlers. Starting with the 2016 graduating class, we will be giving a scholarship to a wrestler from Corunna.
Steeler’s Uncle, Dave Sexton, is chairing the event. Dave said, “Chairing this event is the least I can do to keep his memory alive. It truly helps others fulfill their dreams and live life to the fullest, which is how Stee lived his short life.”
All funds raised during the golf outing will be donated to the memorial scholarship fund. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. June 27 with a shotgun start at
10 a.m. We are hosting the 18-hole, four-person scramble for $160 per team, which includes the cart. Lunch will be served following the outing at the Shiawassee Dog and Gun Club.
“Please sign-up to golf today by contacting Dave at (989) 233-4443. If you are not a golfer, you can still show your support by sponsoring a hole for $50 or simply donating to the event. We will be recognizing our generous sponsors at the event.”
