Shiawassee County will soon be celebrating their 20th Relay For Life. Questions still arise regarding what is, Relay For Life. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser held around the world. More than 5,200 communities and 20 countries participate each year. Each Relay event is special to its community, but the movements true power lies in the combined commitment of thousands of participants, volunteers, and supporters who help the American Cancer Society save lives.

Since 1946, the American Cancer Society has invested more than $4.3 billion in research. In Michigan alone, more than $19 million is currently being invested in research grants. One of those could be the discovery that cures cancer. Each year, the society also provides thousands of free rides to and from

treatments. They have a free 24-hour information service by phone at (800) 277-2345, email, and on-line chats that get over 800,000 requests yearly. In Michigan in 2014, 1,217 women received free help with appearance-related side effects through the “Look Good Feel Better” program. Every state has at least one free Hope Lodge, where cancer patients and their caregivers can stay while receiving treatment. ACS also partners with some hotel chains to provide discounted rates.

The American Cancer Society has funded 47 Nobel Prize recipients and have developed drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer. ACS has pushed legislature for ground breaking results. Relay For Life is a 24 hour party where cancer survivors, caregivers, family, and friends get together to celebrate survivors, remembers those we have lost, and vows to fight back against cancer – to not let it take anyone else.

This year’s Relay For Life Party will be held at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds, 2900 Hibbard Rd., in Corunna beginning Friday, June 17 at 4 p.m. through Saturday, June 18 at 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Interested persons may also contact Trina Balow, Community Manager for Relay For Life at (810) 733-3703.
