RAISE THE FLAGS Governor Whitmer orders flags in Michigan to be raised to full-staff following Trump's proclamation

Michigan, United States — On Monday, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President. In his inaugural address, he promised to “end America’s decline” and “completely and totally reverse” Joe Biden’s actions while in office.

After being sworn in, one of the first things he did was issue a presidential proclamation. The proclamation directed that the United States flag be flown at full-staff for the remainder of his Inauguration Day and for the foreseeable future.

In accordance with Trump’s proclamation, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered that all US and Michigan flags be raised immediately for the remainder of Inauguration Day.

Trump’s proclamation states, in part:

“I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at full-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government, in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions, for the remainder of this day beginning immediately.

I also direct that, for the same period of time, the flag shall be flown at full-staff at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”

Once Inauguration Day is over, Trump’s proclamation states that flags can and should be returned to half-staff, as directed by Proclamation 10876 on December 29, 2024. That proclamation announced the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

Flags should be flown at half-staff for the remainder of Carter’s 30-day mourning period, beginning on December 21.

Whitmer’s announcement stated that flags should be hoisted briefly to the peak before being lowered to half-staff. The procedure is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.
