Construction is well underway at the new Pleasant View development in The Commons in Caledonia Twp. The Pleasant View steering committee, comprised of staff and leadership, were full of excitement as they recently toured the new building construction site. Committee members were able to note where offices would be located, taking special notice of the entrance, the four courtyard areas and the layout of resident rooms. The tour was led by Chad Dean, project superintendent for Spence Brothers, the construction manager for the project.

“We have about 55 people working at the site on any given day and have used local crews and suppliers as much as possible. We have developed a great relationship with the local inspectors who have been very attentive and accommodating,” said Dean.

Construction began in July and the completed list includes all underground plumbing, structural steel in all four pods, and some load-bearing walls. The selection of color schemes for the building has been completed and the board recently approved expenditures for furniture, fixtures, and equipment. Trusses are going up and Consumers Energy has connected power to the site. The goal is to have everything enclosed before winter.

At the existing site located at 729 S. Norton St. in Corunna, construction has begun on a mock-up resident room which will allow staff and residents to become familiar with the new layout as well as offer residents a sneak peek at their new living quarters. “The mock-up will allow both our staff and residents to become familiar with their new environment, which will ease the transition for everyone,” explained Bill Hekker, Pleasant View’s Interim Administrator. “After seeing the progress here today, we’re excited to finish our preview project, which will include wall colors, flooring, and fixtures.”

The Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners recently approved a $13 million bond for Pleasant View which will be paid over the course of 10 years at an interest rate of 2.39 percent. The remainder of the $25 million project cost will be paid from Pleasant View reserves.

A groundbreaking was held in June and construction is on schedule for a late 2017 completion date.
