Over the next few days, parts of Michigan may receive more than a foot of snow accumulation, setting new records

The lake effect snow machine is starting up, just in time for the weekend. Forecasters predict that Northern Michigan could see more than a foot of snowfall in the coming days.

According to Andy Sullivan of the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the majority of the snow will fall in the Upper Peninsula, but Northern Lower Michigan will also see some.

“We’ve just had some very, like historically large lake effect snow events here at the office,” he told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Ryan Wrecker. “We’ve been targeted; the flow of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan has been right into Gaylord, particularly at the office.

We’re about nine miles south of Gaylord, but we had two separate events totaling 20 to 30 inches in a 24-hour period.”

According to Sullivan, some of the northern parts of the state are expected to receive record snowfall this winter.

“The most we’ve ever recorded is 185 inches, and that was in 2006/7 winter,” according to Sullivan. “So, there are some unofficial reports of more than 200 inches in the Gaylord area. But anything between 180 and 200…you’re looking at a lot of snow, with most records broken.”

The lake effect snow is expected to subside Saturday morning, but additional rounds are possible Sunday night and Monday morning. The NWS predicts that another system will bring colder temperatures and more lake effect snow to the area Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, forecasters in Southeast Michigan are predicting lighter snowfall. However, AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg warned that driving conditions on Friday could be dangerous.

“This (Friday) afternoon will see more snow showers. “And by that, I mean reduced visibility for short periods of time,” Lundberg explained. “But that can produce a quick little film of snow in places, so be prepared for that.”

Because it has been so cold, Lundberg warns drivers to expect some icy spots on roads and freeways.

According to Lundberg, the snow will clear in Metro Detroit Friday night, and the weather will be mostly dry and cold over the weekend.

According to Lundberg, the high temperature in Detroit will be 26 degrees on Saturday and around 29 degrees on Sunday.

The next snowfall in Metro Detroit will most likely fall Sunday night into Monday morning, affecting road conditions during the Monday morning commute.
