Liquidation sales have begun at Forever 21 locations across the country, as the fast fashion retailer is rumored to be preparing for its second bankruptcy filing since 2019.
While the company has not confirmed which locations are closing or whether bankruptcy proceedings will begin soon, numerous local news reports have confirmed that certain locations are closing.
Forever 21 first declared bankruptcy in 2019, before being acquired by a retail consortium in 2020, which halted planned liquidations. According to USA Today, Forever 21 has struggled to compete with Chinese online discount retailers such as Shein and Temu.
In a statement to USA Today last month, Forever 21 said it is considering strategic options, including a possible sale. Forever 21 is also looking to cut costs and reduce its store footprint. The company reiterated that no final decisions have been made regarding store closures.
Several local news outlets across the country have reported on area businesses that are conducting liquidations and going-out-of-business sales. In New York, 21 locations have begun sales, while 15 in New Jersey are set to close soon. Stores in California and Washington state have also announced closures.
In Michigan, nine Forever 21 stores are still open, according to the company’s website. There is no in-store pickup at any of the locations, and no information about store closures is available.
According to WJET-TV in Pennsylvania, four Michigan locations have started liquidation sales. However, Forever 21 has yet to confirm any specific store closures in Michigan. There are four Michigan locations on that list.
- Great Lakes Crossing, 4160 Baldwin Road Space #426, Auburn Hills.
- Briarwood, 602 Briarwood Circle, D101A, Ann Arbor.
- Woodland Mall, 3195 28th St. SE, Grand Rapids.
- Partridge Creek, 17360 Hall Road #191, Clinton Township.
At its peak, Forever 21 had 800 locations worldwide and was a staple in shopping malls throughout the United States. According to reports, up to 200 stores could close in the coming weeks.
