A new scholarship fund has been established at the Shiawassee Community Foundation for the benefit of Durand Area High School seniors. The fund was started from the estate of Marjorie N. Smith and is named to honor her parents, Stephen and Pauline Smith. Scholarships from this fund will be awarded to Durand Area High School seniors who have a 3.0 GPA or higher and are in need of financial assistance.

Ms. Smith also bequeathed additional funds to the Durand Area Schools Educational Foundation, which will be used for training, coaching, and skill building for female athletes attending Durand High School.

Ms. Smith graduated from Durand High School in 1941. After high school, she attended Michigan State University, where she earned a degree in physical education. She received her master’s degree from a Los Angeles university and went on to teach health and physical education for 26 years at Citrus College in California.

Although Ms. Smith lived in California for her adult life, she always considered Durand as her home. She always remained active with the community. She supported many Durand projects, including school sports programs, the Veteran Memorial Park, the alumni reunion, and Durand Union Station, to name a few. In 2015, she was selected as the Durand Distinguished Alumnus because of her philanthropic endeavors. Her wishes will be carried on forever for the benefit of Durand students.

Anyone who would like more information regarding the scholarship is asked to please contact Carol Soule at (989) 725-1093 or email at carol@shiacf.org.
