Since the late 1990s, the City of Corunna has decorated McCurdy Park with colorful light displays for area residents to enjoy. Over time and due to considerable use, many of the displays are worn out and in need of replacement. The Corunna Parks and Recreation Commission recognized a need to replace these older decorations with new, animated displays for the community. After a fundraising campaign that they hope to continue as an ongoing effort to make further improvements, several donors came forward in support of this undertaking including: SAGElink Credit Union, Al and Shauna Bayless, Richard and Margaret Waters, Corunna Mills, Johnny V’s, Advanced Air Technology, South 401, Precision Electric, and Heritage Acres.

The new, animated displays can easily be viewed from the front, service drive in the park. The new displays include a complete elf village, along with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, and a snowman tipping his green hat as a friendly welcome. A number of the current Christmas displays were generously refurbished by Angie Fernette, President of the Corunna 4th of July Committee, and her family over the course of this year, so that residents could continue enjoying this annual tradition.

Other events happening at McCurdy Park include the 2016 Festival of Trees located in the Community Center. Almost thirty trees creatively decorated by area school students and sponsored by local merchants are shown throughout the building. In the evening on Saturday, Dec. 10, entertainment will be provided by Ashleigh’s Dance Shack, Kim’s Dance Dynamics, and the Owosso Madrigals and A Capella Choirs. The Owosso Catholic Youth Choir will perform Sunday, Dec. 11, too. Santa will also be available to greet children over the upcoming weekend.

The Corunna Historical Village is also part of the park tour. Buildings will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. from Friday, Dec. 9 through Sunday, Dec. 11.

Those people interested in making a donation for more animated decorations for McCurdy Park in upcoming years, may visit Corunna City Hall or call (989) 743-3650.
