The New Lothrop Hornets dominated the competition Wednesday, Feb. 17 in New Lothrop, as the team captured the Division 4 regional title with a 71-11 win over Bad Axe in the regional final. That followed a 61-12 regional semifinal win over Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary.
New Lothrop advanced to the state quarterfinal with the wins, where they will be one of the final eight Division 4 teams left competing. The Hornets’ wins were impressive, as the team was not challenged and did not even have to use some of its best wrestlers.
Individual district winners Logan Zell, Erik Birchmeier, Steven Garza, Tommy Malloy and Cole Hersch did not get a chance to wrestle in the match against Bad Axe. Even more impressive, Connor Krupp, Austin Wolford, Cole Wendling, Zack Riley, Austin Wendling, Brandon Henige and Caleb Symons all pinned their Bad Axe opponents in 2:15 or less.
Also in area wrestling, Corunna beat Chesaning 48-27 in Ithaca to advance to the regional final, where the team fell to Lake Fenton.
