Nelly Defends Performing At President Elect Donald Trump’s Inauguration ‘I Apologize, I Didn’t Know That I Had To Agree With Your Political Choices’

After reports surfaced that Nelly was scheduled to perform at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, the St. Louis rapper has defended his upcoming performance, claiming, “I apologize. I didn’t realize I had to agree with your political choices.”

According to sources familiar with Donald Trump’s inauguration planning, Nelly, 50, is scheduled to perform at the Inaugural Liberty Ball, one of the President-elect’s three official inaugural balls, on Monday (January 20).

According to USA Today, a press release from the Donald Trump-J.D. Vance Inaugural Committee stated that the three-time Grammy Award-winning artist would perform for Trump.

As previously stated, the Liberty Ball, geared toward Trump supporters, is one of three official inaugural balls that will take place on Monday, following Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, which has been moved indoors to the Capitol due to expected arctic weather conditions in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, the Commander in Chief Ball caters to military personnel, while the Starlight Ball caters to wealthy donors. Trump is expected to give speeches at all three events.

In response to the news of Nelly performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration, social media has gone crazy, calling out Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, and Soulja Boy, who all performed at Friday night’s (January 17) Crypto Ball as part of Donald Trump’s Inauguration weekend.

However, Nelly has defended his performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration, telling Willie D that he was perplexed by the backlash and that he was simply fulfilling his patriotic duty.

During a recent interview, Nelly told Willie D, “I thought you were riding with me because I put on for my city.” I had no idea you were riding with me because you assumed I would ride for the candidate you supported.

I didn’t realize that. I apologize. I didn’t realize I had to agree with your political choices. I thought it was about what you did rather than what you said should be done.”

Nelly continued, “He is the president. He won. I am not on a political campaign. I did not receive any of the $1.5 million to increase voter turnout. I respect the office. It does not matter who is in office.

Similarly, our men and women, brothers and sisters who protect this country must go to war and risk their lives for whoever is in office. So, if they can put their lives on the line for whoever is in office, I can certainly perform for them.”
