Millions will benefit from the Social Security Fairness Act, with higher payments coming sooner than expected

LOS ANGELES – Millions of retired teachers, police officers, and firefighters, including many in California, will receive higher Social Security payments sooner than anticipated, federal officials announced Tuesday.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirmed that it has begun issuing retroactive payments and will increase monthly benefits beginning in April.

Former President Biden signed legislation in January that affects more than 3.2 million people across the country.

The Social Security Administration estimates that over 2.5 million recipients will receive an average monthly increase of $360.

The Social Security Fairness Act, which has been in the works for decades, eliminates federal policies that previously limited benefits for public pensioners and their surviving family members.

Individual payment increases will vary, with some retirees earning more than $1,000 per month.
