Mid-Michigan – The biggest snowfall to hit Mid-Michigan this winter has resulted in an extra day off school for thousands of students on Thursday.
Several school districts canceled classes on Thursday as 4 to 8 inches of snow fell across the region. This made the roads slippery and snow-covered.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning until Thursday morning for counties in the Thumb and along Lake Huron’s shoreline, where lake effect snow could bring totals to the highest in the region.
The warning applies to Arenac, Gladwin, Huron, Iosco, Lapeer, Oscoda, and Sanilac counties. The remainder of Mid-Michigan is under a Winter Weather Advisory until 7 a.m. Thursday.
The Storm Tracker 12 Weather Team issued Alert Days from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning.
Snow began falling in Mid-Michigan late Wednesday afternoon and was expected to continue through the night. The heaviest snowfall was expected to end late Wednesday night, but scattered snow showers or flurries are possible until Thursday morning.
A northeastern wind blowing across Lake Huron may increase snowfall totals in lakeshore communities. Winds were expected to reach 20 to 30 mph Thursday morning, resulting in some blowing snow and reduced visibility.
