Gaylord, MI – Northern Lower Michigan is bracing for severe weather today, with snow and strong winds expected to create hazardous travel conditions on US-2 and other major routes.
Snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches, with locally higher amounts, are expected through tonight. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph will reduce visibility and make the roads slippery.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the worst conditions are expected from midday to afternoon, with snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour.
During these times, visibility will drop dramatically, posing a serious risk to drivers. Travelers are urged to avoid unnecessary trips and make sure their vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies.
Bitter cold temperatures, with wind chills as low as -25°F, will continue into the morning, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
Residents should dress in layers, hats, and gloves when outdoors to limit skin exposure to these dangerous temperatures. Pets should also be kept inside.
Thursday’s forecast calls for continued snow showers, with additional accumulations of less than half an inch. High temperatures will remain in the teens, while wind chills will be well below freezing.
By Friday, conditions are expected to improve, with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper teens.
Prepare for difficult travel today and tonight, and keep an eye on National Weather Service updates for any changes in the forecast.
