Michigan braces for severe winter weather

Michigan had a very mild Christmas, so if you don’t like brutally cold temperatures, you’ll probably appreciate the warm weather during the holidays.

However, Michigan is preparing for severe winter weather. Just a few days ago, it almost felt like spring in some parts of lower Michigan, with light rain and dew replacing snow and ice.

One advantage of the mild weather was that the roads were clear for most of the holiday, so if you needed to travel, you didn’t have to deal with ice and snow. But there’s a change coming in the next two weeks, and here’s what you can expect.

Winter Storm Brewing Across the U.S.

Thirteen states are in the path of a potentially dangerous winter storm that is expected to arrive this week. The winter storm is expected to bring snow and ice from the Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic later this week. We are discussing “heavy snow and significant icing.”

On Thursday, January 2, the National Weather Service Prediction Center published a post on X with a map of the affected areas in the country.

The storm is a little further south than most winter storms, but even areas without snow or ice are expected to experience extremely cold temperatures.

The NWS predicts that parts of Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, and Kansas will be most impacted. Other states with a high risk of impact include parts of New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, Iowa, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

In terms of Michigan’s winter weather, the mild temperatures will leave us for a few weeks. Temperatures are expected to be brutally cold for the next ten days, with highs and lows in the 20s through the rest of the week and into the weekend.

According to the Weather Channel, many parts of Michigan will experience temperatures in the teens by Wednesday, January 8. The teens are expected to last until at least the middle of January, so put on your earmuffs now.

I don’t like the cold weather or the current season, so bring on spring. Both Thanksgiving and Christmas did not have the worst weather in Michigan, so hopefully we’ll be lucky.

While Michigan is expected to be north of the major storm in the United States, the National Weather Service predicts some lake effect snow this week in Cadillac, Big Rapids, Muskegon, Kalamazoo, and some areas of the Upper Peninsula.
