Marquette, MI – A powerful winter storm will cause blizzard conditions in parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula tonight, with strong winds and heavy snowfall making travel hazardous.
Winds could reach 50 mph, causing blowing snow and whiteouts, particularly in Ontonagon, Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties.
According to the National Weather Service, lake effect snow showers will bring an additional 3-5 inches to Alger, Luce, and northern Schoolcraft counties.
Drivers should prepare for treacherous road conditions, particularly on U.S. Highway 41 and M-28, with near-zero visibility at times.
Saturday will bring lingering snow showers, with temperatures reaching 25°F before falling to the single digits at night.
Sunday and Monday will be mostly dry but cold, with high temperatures in the teens. Another round of snow arrives Monday night and Tuesday.
Before heading out, travelers should check the road conditions and prepare an emergency kit. Authorities advise against unnecessary travel in the affected areas.
