Mass Murder Plot Michigan Man Says He Plans a Hate Crime Attack Targeting LGBTQ Community

According to a release from the US Department of Justice Office of Public Affairs, on December 17, 2024, a 22-year-old Michigan man pleaded guilty to one count of committing a hate crime by attempting to carry out a mass killing.

According to court documents, Mack Davis, 22, of Owosso, admitted to attempting to commit mass murder at a political party headquarters and a nearby bar in the Eastern District of Michigan because he associated both with gay people.

According to documents, Davis used search engines and social media sites from at least July 2023 to June 2024 to research, post about, and pay tribute to mass murderers, as well as write about dozens of mass murderers in journals and on other items in his home.

During that time, Davis began to plan his own mass murder, including drafting lists of weapons and tactical gear that he owned and intended to acquire for use in his murder.

By June, Davis had checked off every item on his list of weapons and tactical gear, amassing an arsenal that included two firearms, magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a crossbow and arrows, various bomb-making parts, smoke grenades, tactical gear and clothing, and several knives. Davis labeled one of the knives with the anti-gay slur “FAGGOT Killer.”

Davis solidified his plan to commit mass murder between April and June. Among other things, Davis stated on a social media platform that he planned to commit a mass murder at a political party headquarters, which he referred to as “Location 1.” Davis claimed that Location 1 was “filled with far-left liberal, faggot scum.”

Davis wrote that he planned to continue the mass killing at “Location 2,” a nearby bar Davis referred to as a “faggot bar.”

Davis conducted online research, physical surveillance of both locations, and shared his findings on social media. Davis also vandalized two cars belonging to his gay neighbors, spray-painting the word “fag” on one of them.

Days later, Davis tested one of his firearms, an illegal short-barreled rifle, by shooting approximately 60 bullets into several of his neighbors’ properties, including one of the cars he had previously vandalized.

Davis was arrested by the Owosso Police Department in connection with that shooting. Davis was eventually transferred to federal custody, where he has remained since.

“Davis’ plans were chilling.” “He planned to commit mass shootings at two locations, destroying countless lives and devastating our community, all because of his fanatical hatred for gay people,” said U.S.

Attorney Dawn N. Ison for the Eastern District of Michigan. “I applaud law enforcement for disrupting this heinous plot and arresting Davis before he could carry out his intended attacks. Today’s guilty plea demonstrates my office’s commitment to prosecuting bias crimes and is an important step toward holding this defendant accountable for his actions.”

A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date. Davis faces up to life in prison because his hate crime included an attempt to kill. A federal district court judge will impose his sentence after taking into account the United States Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
