Loved ones remember the Livonia couple lost in a double tragedy

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reports that a man died after falling through the ice while preparing to go ice fishing with his grandson.

The incident happened on Thursday. Scott Levitan’s family is experiencing a double tragedy. His wife, Marylou Levitan, died in a car accident the following day.

We’re told she was on her way to pick up his vehicle.

Scott’s longtime friend, Jamie Izzo, described him as “one of the best human beings I’ve ever met.” “Just a wonderful friend.”

Izzo claimed to have taught alongside Levitan at South Lyon Middle School for over 20 years.

“The kids loved him. He was an excellent teacher. “If I recall correctly, one of his lines was, ‘Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness,'” he said.

South Lyon head football coach Jeff Henson stated, “When I came here, I didn’t know anyone. Coach Levitan was the first person who befriended me and became one of my strongest supporters.”

Levitans’ loved ones’ lives changed abruptly on Thursday, the day after Christmas. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reported that the avid hunter and ice fisherman, along with his 15-year-old grandson, had fallen through the ice on Lake George in Addison Township.

A resident assisted in their rescue, but Levitan was in critical condition due to hypothermia.

Izzo explained, “So, I got up in the morning and checked that text. It was terrible. Awful. And then, within the next day or two, I received the other text, which was unbelievable. That situation in which his wife died the next day while going to get his car.”

A head-on crash in northern Oakland County killed one and injured three.
Marylou Levitan died on Friday, one day after the ice fishing accident. She and Scott were married for forty years.

Investigators said she was a backseat passenger when another vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old, crossed the center line on Rochester Road and collided with the one she was in.

Scott died from his injuries on Tuesday, New Year’s Eve.

7 News Detroit spoke with Scott and Marylou’s daughters and nephews. They did not want to speak on camera. However, they also expressed positive feelings about the couple and shared photos.

They said Marylou lived life to the fullest, loved the Red Wings and Lions, and had season tickets to the Tigers.

While there is a void in the South Lyon community, their hearts go out to the couple’s pride and joy.

Henson stated, “The first person that came to mind was his grandson, whom he adored.” He would travel almost every weekend, as far as I knew, to see his grandson in Pennsylvania after his mother died, I’m not sure how many years ago. That happened about ten or twelve years ago, when she was in her early twenties.

Now, the community is rallying around loved ones as they deal with such an unimaginable loss.
