THIS YEAR, the Laingsburg Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive proceeds after expenses were given to three outstanding programs, Special Olympics Area 22, the Shiawassee Arc and the All Faith Ministry for disABILITIES.

Dan Tomlinson, Special Olympics Area 22 Assistant Director, accepted the Knights’ donation. The mission of Michigan Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy while participating in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship among their families. The athletes achieve their dreams with the support of caring volunteers, coaches, family members and staff. Donations from Michigan citizens and businesses provide funding for the program.

Lynn Grubb, Arc Executive Director, accepted the Knights’ donation. Lynn listed many programs that she oversees in Shiawassee County. Every month there is a recreation activity. This summer there will be a seven-week program for any person with disabilities who lives in Shiawassee County. Arc owns an apartment home with six people living there. They have a guardian for five people. Arc helps mentally disabled adults with housing. They receive no state or federal funding.

Bob Bower accepted the Knights’ donation. Bob developed the Giving Tree Farm, which provides vocational training, employment and recreational activities for disabled adults. Presently he is working with the All Faith Ministry for disABILITIES (AFMD). The AFMD is an ecumenical ministry that is dedicated to serving all persons with birth or life-incurred disABILITIES and their families. The All Faith Ministry believes that all persons, no matter their abilities, are precious gifts from God and everyone is here to have a meaningful life. Participants learn lessons of faith, hope, humor and most importantly, love. “The All Faith Ministry for disABILITIES is committed to serving all people no matter their beliefs, and to empower them to become vital members of their community joined in the love of God.”
