Karla Sofía Gascón, star of 'Emilia Pérez,' apologizes for earlier social media postings

Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of “Emilia Pérez,” apologized for past social media posts that included comments about Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars.

“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” Gascón, who became the first openly trans actor to be nominated for an Oscar, said in a statement released by Netflix.

“As a member of a marginalized community, I am all too familiar with this pain, and I sincerely apologize to those I have hurt. Throughout my life, I have fought for a better world. “I believe light will always triumph over darkness,” she said.

Gascón faced criticism for the first time on Thursday, when writer Sarah Hagi shared screenshots of Gascón’s alleged past posts on X, which Google translated. The posts have since been deleted.

NBC News did not conduct an independent review of Gascón’s previous social media posts before they were removed. Screenshots circulating online suggest that the posts, which were written in Spanish, were published in 2020 and 2021.

“This is all from the star of a movie that is campaigning on its progressive values, you really gotta laugh,” Hagi, who was the first to post the screenshots, wrote on X. “Things like this do not get flagged because you can say whatever you want about Muslims; it is never considered racist. Again, this is not an exhaustive list.”

Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez,” a genre-busting song-and-dance spectacle about a Mexican drug cartel boss who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, has received 13 Oscar nominations, leading the pack of contenders in this year’s race.
