JEFFREY WEISS, the new Shiawassee County director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management was introduced by Sheriff Brian BeGole during the Public Safety and Courts meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
The position has been vacant since last fall, but Weiss, who is recently retired after 25 years of service with the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, is happy to be stepping into the role. Within his time in Ingham County, Weiss also served as the emergency manager for five years.
The part-time Shiawassee County position offers just under $33 per hour. The previous emergency manager, Trent Atkins, vacated the job in September for another position.
In November, BeGole was told by the county board to fill the position.
Weiss is a certified law enforcement officer with some experience as a medical examiner investigator, gained directly following his retirement, and was also recently sworn in as a deputy by Sheriff BeGole.
On Tuesday evening, Weiss said he “looks forward to working with Shiawassee County.” He said he is pleased with the mass communication system in the county and interested in coordinating an instant smart phone notifications program. He also discussed his involvement in rolling out another installment of church safety “due to the climate in our country.” An Advanced Church Security Training event is planned for Saturday, March 14. More information and other security options are available through the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office.
Weiss outlined a number of plans he already has in the works.
