Jealous lady beat boyfriend's child to death and told police she ‘possibly hugged’ the boy ‘too strong’

A 46-year-old woman from Michigan will spend the rest of her life in prison after beating her boyfriend’s 6-year-old son to death because she was jealous of his father’s attention to him.

Hilary Ulp was sentenced to life in a state prison without the possibility of parole for the horrific murder of young Nicolas Kuras by Macomb County Circuit Judge Diane Druzinski, according to authorities. Druzinski imposed the mandatory life sentence after a jury found Ulp guilty of one count of first-degree felony murder in the child’s death after a six-week trial.

“This case is a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating consequences of abuse,” said county prosecutor Peter Lucido in a statement released after the sentencing hearing. “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family, who have been through unimaginable pain and loss over the years. We hope that this sentence provides some measure of justice and healing for those who loved Nicolas.”

Ulp was already in prison when she received her life sentence for causing the injuries that resulted in the boys’ deaths years later. According to a news release from the county prosecutor’s office, Nicolas was initially hospitalized on May 15, 2015, with severe injuries such as blunt force trauma to the head, a broken collar bone, and multiple broken ribs. He was fourteen months old at the time.

An investigation revealed that he had been subjected to severe physical abuse by Ulp, who was babysitting him at the time of his injury. She was arrested, prosecuted, and convicted of first-degree child abuse in 2016. Ulp was subsequently sentenced to 11 to 30 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

According to statements made by Nicolas’ father during police interviews, authorities believe Ulp was motivated to harm Nicolas because she was jealous of the toddler, according to Detroit CBS affiliate WWJ.

According to Macomb Daily, the father informed police that Ulp was babysitting while he was out playing cards, which she did on a regular basis. The next morning, he awoke to the boy crying uncontrollably and instructed Ulp to call 911.

Ulp reportedly told police that Nicolas may have been injured after falling off the bed the night before and hitting his head on the door frame. She also claimed that “she possibly hugged [Nicolas] too strong,” and that “it may have caused injuries.”

Nicolas never recovered from the attack, which left him unable to care for himself, and died as a result of his injuries on January 7, 2021. He was almost seven years old when he died.

Prosecutors then charged Ulp, who was already in prison, with felony murder.
