The Shiawassee County Health Department is conducting a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the HHW site on Chippewa Trail just north of VG’s Grocery store. HHW program funding is provided by Shiawassee County and the Mid-County Sewerage District, with generous donations from Waste Management and Shiawassee Township. The goal of the program is to keep HHW out of the county rivers, lakes, streams, and ditches. The collection is free to all Shiawassee County residents. Past collections have received 211,526 pounds of hazardous waste, which was safely disposed of or recycled. Most of these items would have ended up flushed down the sewer, into a septic system, buried at the local landfill, or dumped in rivers and streams. Accepted materials include anything that is toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive. Latex paint will not be accepted. Latex paint can be dried out and safely disposed of with household trash.
No appointment is necessary for the collection; please bring any household hazardous waste materials starting at 8 a.m. The HHW collection is on a first come, first serve basis. For additional information, persons can contact the Shiawassee County Health Department at (989) 743-2392.
