It’s time for another chilly plunge into Hopkins Lake. The City of Owosso Parks and Recreation Commission is hosting its fifth Plunge for the Parks event. Funds from this year’s plunge will go for the skate park. The Parks and Recreation Commission, in cooperation with Owosso Main Street and Baker College, will hold a mini winter carnival at Hopkins Lake with warming tent, family appropriate games, hot chocolate and hot dogs starting at noon.

Last year’s plunge raised more than $12,000 for the skate park renovation. The Parks and Recreation Commission realized that more fundraising is necessary after receiving a bid over $16,000 to tear out existing asphalt and enlarge the park surface with concrete. The ultimate goal is to build a brand new skate park after holding multiple discussions with local skaters and boarders who stated the current park is outdated and dangerous.

We have a great list of plungers lined up this year. For those interested in attending, the plunge will take place on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at Hopkins Lake. Plungers are asked to wear foot protection and to bring towels and a change of clothes. Costumes are also encouraged. There is no fee to plunge, but plungers are encouraged to gather donations from co-workers and friends. Pledge forms are available by contacting Susan Montenegro, Assistant City Manager/Director of Community Development at susan.montenegro@ci.owosso.mi.us or at (989) 725-0544.

Donations can be made online at http://ci.owosso.mi.us/ Click on the link “Donate to Community Causes” and follow the prompts. You can designate the plunger you wish to sponsor or make a general donation.
