DURAND ATHLETIC Director Bryan Carpenter (right) announced the school system’s inaugural Athlete of the Month winners, Gavin Thompson and Grace Holek, during the Monday, Jan. 14 Durand Board of Education meeting. Carpenter, who was beginning his second week as Durand’s athletic director, praised both Holek and Thompson for their scholastic acumen, in addition to their athletic prowess.
Holek could not attend the Jan. 14 meeting, but Carpenter shared that she is a standout basketball player and golfer, and she is also an officer with the Durand FFA and even finds time for a part-time job at Hass Vision in Durand.
Wrestling coach Brian Hittle (left) described Thompson as a great student athlete and one of the hardest workers he has coached. Hittle shared that he was proud to present Thompson with the Athlete of the Month award, but he admitted that he will miss Thompson, who will graduate at the end of the current school year. Thompson also plays tennis at Durand High School and is a three-time captain of both the wrestling and tennis teams.
