THE PROCEEDS from the 17th annual Durand Area Chicken Barbecue were recently distributed to this year’s recipients – the Durand Patriots, Durand Union Station, the Loaves & Fishes food bank and the Durand Area Schools football program – at the Durand Eagles Aerie in Durand. The event is a collaborative effort by the Durand AMVETS, Lions, Rotary, VFW and Eagles clubs that was started after 9/11 to raise money to provide care packages for active military members serving oversees.

As the organization responsible for organizing the initial Durand Area Chicken Barbecue in 2002, the Durand Patriots get the first $1,000 raised during the event every year. Durand Union Station and Loaves & Fishes each received checks for $1,356 from this year’s fundraiser, and the Durand football program received a check for $300.

Durand Union Station Director Mary Warner-Stone shared during the check presentation that the $1,356 donation will be used to paint the underside of the canopy at the Depot. The Durand football program, under the direction of new coach Rick Winbigler, will use their $300 to continue to update weight room and game equipment.
