Capital Area Community Services, Inc. (CACS) has received funding to assist individuals and families with income at or below 200-percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

   This program is for homeowners and renters who live in Shiawassee County.

   The funds may be used to assist with utilities (metered, deliverable, water/sewer); rental assistance (eviction prevention); property tax foreclosure prevention; funeral assistance (death caused by COVID-19; and minor home repairs (specifically related to health and safety.

   The household must have been negatively impacted by COVID-19; the bill must be the applicant’s or their spouse’s name; documentation must be provided verifying they live at the property (I.D. and bill); the most recent 30 days of income must be provided, which meets income guidelines using grow income (unemployment income is exempt but must still be provided); and they must reside in Shiawassee County. Eligible arrears must be incurred after March 1, 2020.

   Homeowners should contact CACS, 1845 Corunna Ave., in Owosso at (989) 723-3115. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

   Renters must access the online portal of the COVID Emergency Rental Assistance (CERA) funds first: https//ceraapp.michigan.gov. Call (517) 719-0193 with questions.

   Note: if you are a renter, be sure to have your landlord’s email address available when filling out the portal questionnaire, even for utility only assistance.
