JACKIE HURD stepped in as guest speaker during the Relay For Life campaign kick-off Monday evening. Hurd has been actively involved with the organization as a member of the “Rambler Rays” that was formed in 1999 as “Bump’s Boosters,” after Robert “Bump” Lardie, a Perry teacher/administrator/coach had been diagnosed with cancer. He passed in 2000 and “Bump’s Boosters” has since evolved into the current “Rambler Rays.”
Hurd shared, “My journey with cancer did not begin in 2001 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, nor did it end in 2002 when I finished my treatment … I met cancer with the passing of friends and relatives: the passing of my Dad in 1979, my Mother in 2000, and my oldest sister in 2002.”
The annual Relay For Life ceremonies are held at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds in June, and involve lap themes, entertainment, fun activities, drawings, and a luminaria event.
