A $4,000 Georgia Pacific “Bucket Brigade” check has been presented to the Owosso Fire Department for equipment needs.

“We have a strong relationship with our local fire departments, so we are very pleased to help them stay well equipped,” said Jon Zimmer, director of operations at Georgia Pacific’s local facility on S. Delaney Road west of Owosso.

The grant will be toward purchase of full-body protective gear to replace aging gear that no longer meets standards set by the National Fire Protection Association. Each set costs $2,000.

“This grant will help assure that our firefighters have the best protective gear possible so they can safely and efficiently perform their duties,” said Owosso Public Safety Chief Kevin Lenkart. He said the city of Owosso’s budget has been cut due to a reduction in state and federal funding.
